Precision Irradiation Core

Overview of Services

The Irradiation Core utilizes three x-ray instruments from Precision capable of irradiating both small animals and cells. These units are currently implemented by the Himburg Lab to develop therapeutics to mitigate radiation damage to radiosensitive organs such as bone marrow, heart, lungs, and kidneys. Current units in operation include the SmART+, X-RAD 320, and CellRad.
The core can perform whole-body irradiations as well as targeted irradiation of small volumes, tumors, and cells at various dose rates. Core technicians will operate the units on the requestor’s behalf.
The core also breeds and houses the only WAG/Rij strain rats in the United States which are available for purchase. The core also offers specific animal handling services for an hourly fee which includes jugular bleeding in rats. Consultation for irradiation projects and dosimetry is also available.
