Overview of Services

The Children’s Research Institute (CRI) Histology Core offers a full range of routine and specialized histological, immunological and related services on a fee-for-service basis for principle investigators from Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, the Medical College of Wisconsin and other outside institutions. We have worked with over 170 investigators on countless projects!  This full service Histology Core facility is operated in conjunction with the Pediatric Pathology Division of the Department of Pathology, and is under the scientific direction of board certified Pathologists. 

ROUTINE Services

• Tissue Grossing and Processing
• Embedding: Paraffin & OCT (fresh, fixed, frozen tissue) with attention to orientation
• Sectioning: Paraffin, OCT (frozen 2-50μm)
• Automated H&E staining
• Special Stains:  Pigment and Mineral, Microorganism, Carbohydrate, Nerve, and Connective Tissue
• Immunohistochemical (IHC) & Immunofluorescent (IF) staining
• Optimization of user-provided antibodies for IHC and IF
• Free Floating IF for thick sections
• Controls with all approved stains
• Cytospin preparation

CUSTOM Services

• Specialized Histology for a variety of human, animal, insect, fish and insect species
• Paraffin preparation for cells and organoids
• Development and optimization of additional special stains
• Preparation and staining of tissue sections for Laser Capture Microdissection
• Small-group discussions
